I’m a foreign ham radio operator licensee, and I want to operate in Colombia. What do I need to do to get started?
This is a very broad summary of the information detailed in the official page for the MinTIC. Please refer to it for the most complete and up to date information.
Please get started with this procedure at least one month before you arrive, since the procedure is quite slow (can take up to 30 days to be resolved).
First and foremost, welcome to Colombia! Hope you have a safe and fulfilling trip in our wonderful country.
Depending on what your plans are in Colombia, you have two different options.
If you are going to be in a short stay (up to 30 days), and the country you’re a licensee from has a reciprocity agreement with Colombia, you’ll be able to operate with some minimum requirements:
- Fill out the online form in the RABCA gov’t site.
- A digital copy (photo/scan) of your identification (in this case, the first page from your passport)
- A digital copy of your official amateur radio license. This will need to be officially translated, validated and legalized into Spanish.
- A bank payment towards the Information Technologies and Communications Fund for $41.276 (Colombian peso, this value is up to date for 2024). Scan the payment slip.
All this information will be required at the previously mentioned online form.
If you are going to stay for longer, or decide to reside in our country, you’ll need to take the license certification exam, and obtain a proper (HJ/HK) Colombian ham radio license.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to get started as a Technician (HJ) level ham radio operator, with all the restrictions that come from it, and wait for at least two years to advance to General (HK) class.
Whatever route you take, you can always count with our League to help you out on your road to operate in our country. Never hesitate to contact us.
